This piece bears the historical name Toranj , the central medallion design originating in 16th-century Safavid Tabriz. During the Safavid Golden Age, royal court workshops in Tabriz popularised this sunburst medallion across illuminated manuscripts, architectural tilework, and famous court carpets. The central roundel features Eslimi (arabesque) and floral motifs executed in traditional Persian Minakari (cloisonné/enamel work). Lapis lazuli beads and seed pearls frame the gold pendant, representing the classic Silk Road gemstones historically traded and set in the bazaars of Tabriz. Symbolically, the Toranj medallion represents the sun and spiritual wholeness, serving for centuries as an enduring emblem of Persian royal adornment.
