Rooted in pre-colonial metallurgy and elevated during the Spanish colonial period (16th to 19th centuries), tambourine jewellery (tamborin or amami) is an iconic Philippine goldsmithing tradition renowned for its delicate, lace-like filigree work (kalado). Originally inspired by Catholic rosaries, reliquaries, and indigenous crescent amulets (cremallera or choker designs), these pieces were hand-twisted from fine threads of gold or silver by local plateros (metalsmiths). During the colonial era, women wore them not only as expressions of faith, social prestige, and heirloom wealth, but also as a subtle way to preserve native craftsmanship under colonial rule.
