Tolima Anthropomorphic Pectoral (PC1019)

Originating between 1 CE and 1000 CE in the Middle Magdalena River Valley of pre-Columbian Colombia, these iconic ornaments were crafted by master goldsmiths of the Tolima culture using the lost-wax casting technique and tumbaga (a sacred gold-copper alloy). Characterized by strict symmetry and planar geometry, the design represents an anthropomorphic figure—frequently interpreted as a human-bat or avian shamanic transformation—featuring a trapezoidal head, outstretched horizontal arms, a segmented torso, and a crescent-shaped anchor base. Worn over the chest by political and spiritual leaders, pectorals like this were emblems of divine power and ritual duality, believed to facilitate spiritual transcendence between terrestrial and spirit realms before being deposited as mortuary offerings in sacred tombs.
