Tairona "Batman" (PC1011)
A unique reproduction, originating from the pre-Columbian Tairona civilization (900–1600 CE) in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region of modern-day Colombia, this iconic piece portrays a high-ranking shaman or chieftain mid-transformation into a sacred animal, typically a bat or bird of prey. Crafted by ancient goldsmiths using the lost-wax casting technique often with tumbaga, a sacred gold-copper alloy, the figure features an elaborate, symmetrical headdress flanked by stylized serpent or raptor heads and spiral motifs. In Tairona cosmology, wearing such a pectoral allowed religious leaders to channel divine solar energy, assume the spiritual power of predator deities, and navigate the spirit realm during sacred rituals.
