Zenú Filigree (PC1032)

Zenú (Sinú) Culture, a pre-Columbian civilization from the Caribbean lowlands of northern Colombia (flourished roughly 200 BCE – 1600 CE).

Originating along the San Jorge and Sinú river valleys, the Zenú were master metalsmiths famous for their refined openwork cast in gold and tumbaga (a gold-copper alloy).
Originally designed primarily as ornate nose rings (narigueras) worn by high-ranking nobility and shamans, modern reproductions adapt the motif into drop earrings.
The crescent motif symbolizes the moon, female energy, and fertility, while the lattice patterns mirror the extensive canal networks and basketry textiles the Zenú engineered.
Excavated frequently in elite burial mounds (túmulos), these sacred ornaments signalled immense social status and served as spiritual armour during rituals and transitions to the afterlife.
