Orejera / Nariguera Zenú (Sinú) (PC1031)
These earrings are modern replicas inspired by the goldwork of the Zenú (Sinú) culture, an indigenous civilization that flourished in the river valleys of northern Colombia between approximately 200 BCE and 1600 CE.
Renowned as master metallurgists, Zenú artisans specialized in the lost-wax casting technique, pioneering a signature "false filigree" style that produced delicate, openwork lace patterns out of gold and tumbaga (a gold-copper alloy). The distinctive crescent, fan-like shape mimics the rays of the sun, aquatic flora, or woven basketry, often flanked by stylized waterbirds or felines symbolizing fertility, power, and connection to the spirit world. Elite rulers and shamans wore these ornaments—originally crafted as large earrings (orejeras) or nose rings (narigueras)—during ceremonial rituals to project divine solar radiance and denote supreme social rank.
