Pectoral Tolima (PC 1028)

Originating from the pre-Columbian Tolima culture (circa 200 BCE – 1000 CE) along the Magdalena River valley in south-central Colombia. The figure represents a sacred anthropo-zoomorphic being—a shamanic fusion of a human deity with protective animal spirits, primarily bats, jaguars, or predatory birds. These flat pectorals were worn as ceremonial chest pendants by elite chiefs and shamans to channel supernatural power. Today, this iconic silhouette—preserved famously in the Museo del Oro in Bogotá—stands as one of the most recognized archaeological symbols of ancient Andean-Colombian goldsmithing.
