Disco pectoral Tairona (PH1038)

Reproduction of a masterpiece which was crafted by the Tairona civilization (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region, northern Colombia), typically dating between 900 and 1600 CE. Original is made of high-carat gold or tumbaga (a gold-copper alloy) using the lost-wax casting (cera perdida) method, finished with fine openwork and depletion gilding. Worn as a breastplate or collar ornament by high-ranking chieftains (caciques) or
shamans during sacred rituals. The radial design evokes solar rays, while the circle of repetitive anthropomorphic figures represents ancestral spirits, masked ritual dancers, or shamans in a transformational state.
