Dervish (PH1007)
The central medallion depicts the Whirling Dervish, an enduring spiritual symbol rooted in the Mevlevi Sufi Order (Mevleviyye), founded in 13th-century Konya (modern-day Turkey) by the followers and son of the Persian mystic and poet Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi (1207–1273).
Spiritual Awakening: In 1244, Rumi encountered the wandering dervish Shams-i Tabrizi. Their companionship transformed Rumi from an orthodox Islamic jurist into an ecstatic mystic poet who viewed divine love as the ultimate reality.
Tradition recounts that Rumi first began whirling in the marketplace of Konya upon hearing the rhythmic hammering of goldbeaters (zargaran), experiencing divine ecstasy through rhythmic motion.
Every element of the whirling silhouette featured on the pendant carries specific allegorical meaning within Sufi philosophy:
The Stance (Conduit of Grace):
The right palm faces upward toward the heavens to receive divine blessing, truth, and universal love (feyz).
The left palm turns downward toward the earth to distribute that grace to humanity and all creation, keeping nothing for the ego.
The head is tilted, aligning with the heart's axis.
The Attire (Kefen and Sikke):
The tall cylindrical hat represents the tombstone of the ego (sikke).
The flared, sweeping skirt (tennure) represents the shroud of worldly desire. As the dervish turns counterclockwise—mirroring the Earth orbiting the sun and pilgrims circumambulating the Kaaba—the ego dies, leaving only pure spiritual presence.
Global Recognition: In 2008, UNESCO officially recognized the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
