Aztec Calendar (AZ1002)

The design featured on the jewelry is the Aztec Sun Stone (frequently referred to as the Aztec Calendar Stone, or Piedra del Sol in Spanish).

Carved from basalt in the early 16th century during the late Postclassic period—likely under the reign of Emperor Moctezuma II—this massive 24-ton monolith served as an altar and cosmological diagram depicting the Mexica creation myth of the five suns (world eras) centered around the sun god Tonatiuh. Following the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan in 1521, it was buried face-down near the main ceremonial precinct to suppress indigenous religious practices. It remained hidden for over 250 years until it was unearthed in December 1790 during repaving work in Mexico City's central square (the Zócalo); today, the original monument is housed in Mexico City's National Museum of Anthropology and stands as one of the most famous symbols of Mexican heritage.
